    Neon Indian LP Psychic Chasms

Adam Palomo is Neon Indian. Born in 1988 he knows very little of the NES and the 80′s. So for Palomo, Neon Indian is a musical exploration into a decade that has long since past. I will of course listen to the Neon Indian’s LP Psychic Chasms unintendedly, with a childhood-like nostalgia. The next two songs are my favorites from Psychic Chasms, while not great musical pieces their synthed melodies are charmingly vintage and harmonic.

    Enjoy!

Ivan Ives: The 1st Musical Entrepreneur of the 21st Century

    ivan ives wearing a snowcap

Super savvy LA hip hop artist Ivan Ives is the first I’ve seen officially go off-record and fully adapt to the new way music is distributed over the internet. Rather than spending a year on putting together a full album and forcing consumers to spend upwards of $10, Ivan Ives has taken a 1960′s approach to distribution. Every month his fans get the opportunity to pick up his newest track for less than $1 on iTunes and Amazon. It’s a great way to consistently engage his fans and get them excited for every 30th day of the year with minimal financial risk involved. Ivan Ives has dubbed this his First of the Month project and plans to release it as a full album at the end of this year, but of course he won’t stop you from just picking up your favorite tracks along the way, in fact he encourages it, “For a long time musicians were able to package two great songs with ten bad ones, call it an album, and make you buy it for $15 at Tower Records. Today, digital distribution is challenging artists to combat music stealing on the internet by producing a higher percentage of great songs on an album, the type of music they don’t mind paying for…” – Ivan Ives

Here are two of Ivan Ives’ latest tracks, the first of which is called, “Back” debuted back on July 1st and premiering ahead of schedule is August’s First of the Month, “You” ft Christina Castellan.

    Enjoy!

    La Roux is Lazerproof

This is my favorite song from Major Lazer’s full remix album of La Roux’s debut EP; he calls it Lazerproof. This track is pure summer gold.

    Enjoy!

Who wouldn’t ride a speed boat to heaven?

On the heals of Cavaliers of Fun, at least on my music calender, comes Alaska in Winter. Before this post I didn’t know anything about this band so just like anyone I hit up Google which inevitably took me to their Wiki page. I was surprised to find that it was full of great information. So, I’ll save you the trip. Here is what we know:

“Alaska in Winter is an American electronic band consisting of front man Brandon Bethancourt, who dropped out of art school in Albuquerque, New Mexico and reportedly, “spent a semester in a tiny cabin out in the middle of nowhere Alaska recording music on a laptop during the winter” and which later came to be known as the project, “Alaska in Winter”.”

Released November 18th 2008 on the album Holiday, “Speed Boat to Heaven” is a another great Summer tune that won’t get old. Enjoy this smile popper and then take a trip back in time for some Cavaliers of Fun and see if you can hear the similarities.

This new brand of freelance electronic music is starting to gain some momentum. It doesn’t remind me of anything in specific but there is no doubt it’s ancient past for someone like me – childhood. The rhythm and bass loop combination creates a carefree sound that will turn your frown upside down. It’s like that primary school rush that builds as you race towards the door for recess.

    Enjoy! (downloads past the break)

Maino says it’s Tiger’s wood not just Tiger Woods

Nothing amazing here. Maino, a popular Bronx rapper calls himself a “game changer” but really he sounds less game changing than the latest Weezy, Em, Jay or 2pac remix. I mostly find this song entertaining for it’s lyrical mockery of Tiger Wood’s lack of judgement with his wood.

    Enjoy! (download past the break)

New Album from Vampire Weekend is not a “Contra”

I’m probably the last person in the musical blogosphere to mention Vampire Weekend’s second album Contra. Partially due to technical reasons with the site and partially because I wanted to listen each song carefully before putting my thoughts down.

This album reminds me a lot of Kanye’s 2nd album Graduation, in a relative, not musical sense. From song to song you can tell that Ezra Koenig has grown up since the bands first self titled album, Vampire Weekend. In contrast to their first LP (brilliantly indulgent Afro-pop) Contra has musical ambitions set in a multiple of genre’s, showing the musical precision and boldness that VW can bring to the ever changing indie sound. From it’s natural sounds to synth-pops; decorum to peccadillo; party prose to hopeless balladry; Contra blends polarizing sounds in a brave new way and the result will likely be up for album of the year. Have a listen (below) and you won’t be disappointed. My favorites thus far are White Sky, Run and Giving Up the Gun.

    Enjoy!

    Hey Champ – Winner’s Circle

Hey look! Hey Champ finally dropped their impressive remix project, leaving little to the expectant heart following the success of the internationally acclaimed single, “Cold Dust Girl”, previously earning them a spot alongside Lupe Fiasco, who signed them to his own 1st & 15th record label in 2008.

In conjunction with dubFrequency, Imeem, Bandit Productions, and Life or Death PR, the Winners Circle remix album is available for FREE. The magnetic cast of artists involved includes Mike Posner, The Cool Kids, Passion Pit, The Sounds, French Horn Rebellion, 80′s Kidz, Priors, Moneypenny, and more. Winner’s Circle truly showcases the bands dynamic production expertise, synthetic sounds and pop savvy as they take on their favorite music.

    Enjoy!
