Yolanda Be Cool – We No Speak Americano

This amazing track was one that my brother, the Jerbs, brought to my attention after returning Stateside from his short stay at a Paris nightclub. It’s just about the most catchy song you’ve ever heard. Yolanda Be Cool is the collaboration of two musically gifted blokes from Australia: Sylvester Martinez and Johnson Peterson. On the first song, “We No Speak Americano” they brought in the skills of producer Duncan MacLennan aka DCUP, and what they came away with was house music at its finest. The other two songs, “Afro Nuts” also featuring DCUP and a remix of “Annie Mac”.

Rumor has it that the name Yolanda Be Cool is an obscure Pulp Fiction reference. There is a scene in the movie where Jules Winnfield tells Yolanda, the coffee-shoprobber, to be cool. Nice.

    La Roux is Lazerproof

This is my favorite song from Major Lazer’s full remix album of La Roux’s debut EP; he calls it Lazerproof. This track is pure summer gold.

    Enjoy!

CFCF undresses Fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love”, takes it to a disco…

CFCF has taken Fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love” and completely morphed it’s feel with echoing electric synth’s. It adds the sweet sense of summer without interrupting the classic melody of the 1987 hit. If you are really digging this track, like me, then you should be thrilled because CFCF has laid airy disco loops over several other magnum opi. Despite borrowing from an older group than usual - CFCF manages to keep his debut album sounding modern. It’s called Continent and you can find it almost anywhere music is sold.

    Enjoy! (downloads past the break)

Who wouldn’t ride a speed boat to heaven?

On the heals of Cavaliers of Fun, at least on my music calender, comes Alaska in Winter. Before this post I didn’t know anything about this band so just like anyone I hit up Google which inevitably took me to their Wiki page. I was surprised to find that it was full of great information. So, I’ll save you the trip. Here is what we know:

“Alaska in Winter is an American electronic band consisting of front man Brandon Bethancourt, who dropped out of art school in Albuquerque, New Mexico and reportedly, “spent a semester in a tiny cabin out in the middle of nowhere Alaska recording music on a laptop during the winter” and which later came to be known as the project, “Alaska in Winter”.”

Released November 18th 2008 on the album Holiday, “Speed Boat to Heaven” is a another great Summer tune that won’t get old. Enjoy this smile popper and then take a trip back in time for some Cavaliers of Fun and see if you can hear the similarities.

This new brand of freelance electronic music is starting to gain some momentum. It doesn’t remind me of anything in specific but there is no doubt it’s ancient past for someone like me – childhood. The rhythm and bass loop combination creates a carefree sound that will turn your frown upside down. It’s like that primary school rush that builds as you race towards the door for recess.

Foster The People likes your old school Reebok’s

Lets kick off Spring with a blissfully warm Summer tune, “Pumped Up Kicks” because Summer will never come soon enough…

Foster The People is a new band from LA, get to know them now because they’re going to be all over the airwaves in the coming months. They are the newest band in the mix of with the likes of: Phoenix, Empire of the Sun, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit etc. They produce the music that makes normal people smile and indie kids jump with their arms pointed to the sky. I’m really loving this track so have a listen and then after you fall in love click on the remix by The Highweights below and fall in love all over again.

Maino says it’s Tiger’s wood not just Tiger Woods

Nothing amazing here. Maino, a popular Bronx rapper calls himself a “game changer” but really he sounds less game changing than the latest Weezy, Em, Jay or 2pac remix. I mostly find this song entertaining for it’s lyrical mockery of Tiger Wood’s lack of judgement with his wood.

Binary Entertainment has started a Heatwave

There is very little information known about Binary Entertainment but their mission is clear:

“Binary is a family of LA based dance music producers and artists. Bringing original content, Binary artists strive to bring the song back to the dance floor.” – Binary Entertainment

I pulled “Heatwave” down by following a link from Binary Entertainment’s Facebook page to one of their artist’s Myspace pages, Fabian. Fabian describes his music as hardcore visual electro that is of galactic oddesean influence; many of his songs do sound that way, which is why I don’t like them, however I would describe “Heatwave” as lighthearted, energetic and fun.

New Album from Vampire Weekend is not a “Contra”

I’m probably the last person in the musical blogosphere to mention Vampire Weekend’s second album Contra. Partially due to technical reasons with the site and partially because I wanted to listen each song carefully before putting my thoughts down.

This album reminds me a lot of Kanye’s 2nd album Graduation, in a relative, not musical sense. From song to song you can tell that Ezra Koenig has grown up since the bands first self titled album, Vampire Weekend. In contrast to their first LP (brilliantly indulgent Afro-pop) Contra has musical ambitions set in a multiple of genre’s, showing the musical precision and boldness that VW can bring to the ever changing indie sound. From it’s natural sounds to synth-pops; decorum to peccadillo; party prose to hopeless balladry; Contra blends polarizing sounds in a brave new way and the result will likely be up for album of the year. Have a listen (below) and you won’t be disappointed. My favorites thus far are White Sky, Run and Giving Up the Gun.

    Enjoy!
