New Album from Vampire Weekend is not a “Contra”

I’m probably the last person in the musical blogosphere to mention Vampire Weekend’s second album Contra. Partially due to technical reasons with the site and partially because I wanted to listen each song carefully before putting my thoughts down.

This album reminds me a lot of Kanye’s 2nd album Graduation, in a relative, not musical sense. From song to song you can tell that Ezra Koenig has grown up since the bands first self titled album, Vampire Weekend. In contrast to their first LP (brilliantly indulgent Afro-pop) Contra has musical ambitions set in a multiple of genre’s, showing the musical precision and boldness that VW can bring to the ever changing indie sound. From it’s natural sounds to synth-pops; decorum to peccadillo; party prose to hopeless balladry; Contra blends polarizing sounds in a brave new way and the result will likely be up for album of the year. Have a listen (below) and you won’t be disappointed. My favorites thus far are White Sky, Run and Giving Up the Gun.

    Enjoy!

    Hey Champ – Winner’s Circle

Hey look! Hey Champ finally dropped their impressive remix project, leaving little to the expectant heart following the success of the internationally acclaimed single, “Cold Dust Girl”, previously earning them a spot alongside Lupe Fiasco, who signed them to his own 1st & 15th record label in 2008.

In conjunction with dubFrequency, Imeem, Bandit Productions, and Life or Death PR, the Winners Circle remix album is available for FREE. The magnetic cast of artists involved includes Mike Posner, The Cool Kids, Passion Pit, The Sounds, French Horn Rebellion, 80′s Kidz, Priors, Moneypenny, and more. Winner’s Circle truly showcases the bands dynamic production expertise, synthetic sounds and pop savvy as they take on their favorite music.

    Enjoy!

Friendly Fires – Friendly Fires LP

The Friendly Fires self titled album is one of the freshest of the year. I found it via Youtube and The Hype Machine through various remixes of their first single “Paris”. Then I bought the album and found that Friendly Fires had much more to offer than just a few singles. In a music genre gone neon Friendly Fires is still ‘keeping it real’ – in doing so they’ve created an album where nearly every track could be an indie hit. To put it simply this album has a ton of energy but not in a way that you would expect.

My top 5 tracks from Friendly FiresFriendly Fires LP.

    Enjoy!

    Paris
    Strobe
    Lovesick
    Ex Lover
    In The Hospital

    Bear by Hospice

From the cleverly autobiographical self-released album, The Antlers by Hospice comes the somber groove, “Bear”. The opening to “Bear” is magically charming, beginning to the bars of “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Start”;  meanwhile the elegiac lyrics, “Well we’re not scared of making caves/ Or finding food for him to eat/ We’re terrific of one another/ And terrified of what that means” details a couples dilemma until the joyful chorus cues to a 25 second combination of percussion and electric / acoustic guitar, “We’re too old/ We’re not old at all”. “Bear” is The Antlers shining moment.

    Enjoy!

this is for the white in your eyes

The Danish collective, Choir of Young Believers just released their first full length album, This Is For The White in Your Eyes, a spectacular teeming of music and emotion – the type of sound that will send goose bumps down your spine. The vocals echo in old world warmth and bend the mind to paint pictures of haunted churches, sunlight filled rivers, purple mountain tops and the never ending kiss.

You can hear the full length album after the break.

Camera Obscura! My Maudlin Career LP

I don’t do this often, that is, write a post about an album that I know my Mom would fall in love with. I generally have distaste for this type of music, but My Maudlin Career by Camera Obscura is just too good to pass up. The raspy echo of her voice alongside the simpleton lyrics is catching, not catchy, I almost fell in…  Anyone who disagrees gets a big fat “Child, please!”

‘XX’ by The XX due out August 17th

Soft synths bring the beat from a cool breeze to a warm humid day on the Florida coast, it’s quite a trip.  The lyrics are equally potent, they remind me of Citizen Cope – touching, oddly romantic and yet upbeat.  This is all very impressive for a band of 19 year olds, their sound is certainly beyond their years.  I’ve put up three songs after the break, head on by for a preview of what you can expect to find on their new album ‘XX due out in a few days.
